BRISTOL CENTRAL   6    DOWNEND SAINTS   0                     April 17th 2014                      Half Time   4 - 0

After a mediocre game against Longwell Green on Sunday, the team bounced back with
an impressive and emphatic win against Downend Saints. After the recent goal drought of
only 4 goals in the last 5 matches, it was good to see 6 different players getting on the score sheet in this convincing win.
The coaches made the bold move of partnering Jonathan and Taijon in Central Midfield.
If these positions are the 'Engine of the Team', then these two players have great motors !
Both Jonathan and Taijon are great defenders and they combine this with the energy and desire to get forward and join the attack. In fact, they attacked from the kick-off and caused the Downend team some serious problems from the word go. Taijon tends to rampage forward whereas Jonathan glides forward with silky skills and great positional awareness. Both of them
know where the goal is ! Within 5 minutes TAIJON burst forward to open the scoring with his 4th
goal of the season. Well done Taijon ! Shortly after, KHARI made it 2-0 with a good volley from
close range for his 28th goal of the season. Well done, Khari !
But it wasn't all about the middle of the pitch. Khari on the Left and Ray on the Right were
finding plenty of space on the flanks to show off their speed and trickery. Khari went flying down
the wing but looked to be blocked in by a defender. However, with quick thinking and quick feet,
he tricked his way past him to lay on a neat short pass for JONATHAN to fire home our 3rd goal
(his 4th of the season).Well done, Jonathan ! Then RAY received  the ball on the right and played a great 'give and go' with Taijon. The one-touch return pass came back at knee height
but he somehow managed to control it and cleverly flicked the ball past the outstretched arms of the onrushing 'Keeper. Well done Ray ! The only scare at our end of the pitch was when Lemar played a back pass and Lewis picked it up. Perhaps he was getting bored with nothing
to do. The resultant free-kick came to nothing.
The coaches made a few changes at half time to rest Jonathan, Khari and Lemar and
bring on Teon, Nabil and Morgan. Lemar had a great game at Left Back...a newcomer this
season, he continues to improve with every game. Always a strong defender, he now has a
better positional sense and made a number of timely tackles and good clearances. Sahr dropped back to replace Lemar and ably supported Morgan who came on to replace Khari.
Ray went inside to replace Jonathan and Nabil took Sahr's place. The changes gave players
a chance to showcase their skills in different positions, Morgan gave an excellent performance
in a more attacking position and kept possession well and SAHR showed his normal sound
play and went forward to score our 5th goal...  his 15th League goal of the season. Well done Sahr !
Finally, Nabil supplied a great pass to TEON, who was standing in acres of space(as usual !).
He had time to look up, pick his spot, and and drill a hard accurate shot across the 'Keeper into
the far corner of the net. Well done, Teon, your 4th Goal of the season !
I liked the way Lewis varied his clearances, sometimes throwing shorter to the backs, sometimes kicking long . Caleb had an excellent game at Right Back often taking the ball out
of defence to help launch attacks and Jacob put in a commanding game at Centre Back with
his anticipation, positional sense and strength, as well as great little passes to the midfield. He
dealt effectively with high balls by using his head(in both senses of the word !)
They say that 'Attack is the best form of Defence' ! This game proved that. This is the sort
of performance the team will need in Division A next year. Keep up the good work. Well done
to the whole Squad of players and the Coaches.
